Pavlovsk Palace, St Petersburg
Introduction
Pavlovsk was built for Russian Tsar Paul I, the only son of Catherine the Great, and was designed by the celebrated Scottish architect Charles Cameron. The palace is shaped like a bracelet, its curved wings spreading symmetrically from a central dome-topped square into an elegant arcade.
Unlike most palaces which are massive in scale and sombre in mood, Pavlovsk is a jewel. Its proportions are classical and readily understandable, and its tone is serene, capturing the eye as a masterpiece of picturesque composure.
The Palace is filled to the rafters with furniture and dcor of extraordinary beauty and quality, most of it owing to the exquisite and refined tastes of Tsar Paul I's wife, Maria.
